The City of Popes
Located in Southern France, Avignon is the largest capital of the department of Vaucluse. Classified as a UNESCO world Heritage Site, the charming city centre is home to the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon.
The historic Palais des Papes is one of the most significant medieval Gothic buildings in Europe. Set within a square with the same name, the Papal Palace is an important tourist attraction where you can see the pope’s private chambers and frescoes by Matteo Giovannetti.
Le Pont d’Avignon was built in the Middle Ages and, according to the legend, a young shepherd called Benezet was inspired by angels to build the bridge. The children’s song "Sur Le Pont D'Avignon" is now famous all over the world.
The beautiful gardens of Rocher des Doms are ideal for a promenade or picnic. Featuring a large pond, swans, ducks and lush vegetation, this place is perfect for relaxing moments. From the top, you can enjoy the views of the Rhône.

I liked the city, with Palais du Papes etc, but also the surroundings. I travelled in bus to Pont du Gard, St Remy de Provence (van Gogh area!) and southern part of Parque Natural Régional du Luberon, all very exciting places.

Beautiful medieval city with impressive palaces, churches, walls etc. A wonderful place to hang around. After sunset it might feel a bit uncomfortable, however I did not feel particularly unsafe at any point.

Great history and narrow lovely streets to walk through. Visit to Popes old digs and the old bridge were great. Natural museum was free, however it took only 15 minutes to see the collection. Restaurant’s and food there were great as well. Could do without all of the beggars on the street, some who were obviously drunk and quite aggressive constantly asking us for money. Carry some coins just in case you get cornered and feel threatened as it’s the easiest way out of it without risk.

The hotel is well stocked with coffee, water and juice which is free for your whole stay. The garden area is beautiful and we used it to have lunch and relax on busy days in Avignon. Great restaurant reservation for us. Fantastic bed, clean marble floor, lots of ice tea and Coca Cola in the fridge for us, incredible coffee and expresso machine.

Our host gave a lot of good adivces on the restaurants, car parks, and attractons nearby. He offered to help us book a restaurant and it was amazing. Our host Matt is very friendly, respectful, and speaks very good English. He makes breakfast fresh frrom scratch every morning. We could not have asked for a better host or a better estate to stay in south of France. The three dogs onsite are cute and easy to interact.
