Kominka Guesthouse Hagi Akatsukiya, hotel in Hagi

Kominka Guest house Hagi Akatsukiya offers accommodations in a traditional house located in Hagi. Free WiFi access is available. Extras include a laptop safe.

I had an amazing experience staying there when I visited Hagi. It's a traditional building with comfy bunkbeds and plenty of common areas to mingle with the other travellers. Kitchen is free to use and there are two toilets and a bathroom, all kept clean. The host has created a very warm and welcoming atmosphere and people usually sit down together for dinner and drinks. The place is a short walk to the beach and Hagi itself is a small town so you can walk everywhere easily. I am definitely coming back here and I totally recommend it if you are looking for a place to stay in Hagi.

Hagi No Yado Tomoe, hotel in Hagi

Located an 8-minute walk from JR Higashihagi Train Station, Hagi No Yado Tomoe, proudly presents its century-old authentic, Japanese atmosphere.

Very beautiful ryokan near the Hagi Castle Town with free parking. We booked a Japanese-style corner room for 3 nights and had a large garden to ourselves. The garden in the common area is also very beautiful esp at night. We opted for half board our entire stay and were very impressed with the food! The menu was different every time and we found ourselves anticipating what they’ll serve for the next meal. One of the meals they served was an all-puffer fish meal, which is arguably one of the best and most unforgettable meals of my life. The staff were also very warm and helpful up until the very moment we left. Definitely worth making the trip to Hagi just to stay here.

I absolutely loved Hagi, we stayed for 3 nights and plan to return and stay again sometime in the future. The city art museum is impressive, the old merchant houses are interesting, the beach is absolutely stunning and the pottery was too tempting as I bought 4 pieces. I'd recommend visiting the atmospheric temples - Tokoji and Daishoin. Definitely stop by Meirinkan - this combines an interesting museum with tourist information, cafe, restaurant and shop selling a good selection of items. Sadly we didn't have time to visit the temple ruins or Mount Kasayama.

Hagi was home to several prominent and important figures in Japanese history. It was the hot bed of ideas starting with Yoshida Shoin whose free schools encouraged pride in being Japanese and also in having aspirations/dreams. The Hagi 5 brought back ideas from England that helped launch Japan's rapid industrialization. It was the crossroads for Satsuma's Saigo Takamori, Tosa's Ryoma Sakamoto and Hagi's Shoin Yoshida to formulate a united plan to bring down the Tokugawa Shogunate. This area should have been declared a World Heritage Side. Maybe it would be if more information was provided in English for non-Japanese visitors.

    Such a pleasant surprise!

Such a pleasant surprise! I was visiting as part of a longer research trip, so I only had two nights in town, but I wish I could have extended my stay to see more sites. The locals were incredibly welcoming and warm, and there is more than enough to see for a long weekend stay.

It's a must if you're interested in the history of Japan, since the majority of the people playing a substantial role in political transformation of Japan in 19th century were either born or studied here. There are many places commemorating those people and events in the city, as well as museums. Also, the beach is a beautiful spot for having a nice walk.
