We visited quite a few places during our two week stay in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto and then we took a two day bike ride from Imabari to Onomichi). Nikko was the most beautiful of the beautiful places we visited. Took a bus ride up the hill and hiked in the forest which boasts two types of bear, deer and monkeys. The temple was beautiful and we enjoyed trying local food. We each had a "Yuba set" at a local restaurant.

The rooms were freezing cold no heating and it was -5 inside the hotel. They provided us with one thin blanket nothing like advertised, the windows were open and unable to close. We are having to seek medical help as one of my friends has developed hypothermia. No food no drink and the toilet facility does not flush.
Said in advert the beds would be made up for us. After a vicious scolding by the owners wife we had to awkwardly make up our own beds with no instructions at all.
If you like being shouted at, sleeping on a solid cold floor with a stone for a pillow this is definitely the place for you.
Didn't really wanna even give the one star but no choice for 0*.

Nikko is a lovely small place.
Nikko is a lovely small place. The local Chinese on the high street has amazing food, it has a very small door and would be easy to miss, but make the effort to find it.
The temples are amazing, but I loved the mountains, if you like trekking then you will love Nikko.

Fabulous place to visit with the right balance between nature walks and temple and shrine visits. Our favorite visits were Toshogu and Rinno-ji Temples, a day trip to Chuzenji Lake and Kegon Falls with a walk towards the Italian and English Embassy residences was beautiful. If you still have time, the Imperial Tomozawa Villa is worth spending a couple of hours at. We did everything by bus and it was very well organised. Train station has convenient coin lockers for luggage and a Yamato counter to deliver your luggage at your hotel so you can start visiting without being troubled.

i loved the variety of hiking trails - there was no shortage of beautiful nature. there are populated trails and quieter trails, and the bus service was very convenient once i got the hang of it. while the shrines were pretty enough, i preferred the rinnoji shrine gardens and would have preferred to spend more time hiking instead of fighting with the crowds at toshugu shrine. senjogahara was stunning and i would have liked to spend more time at the yumoto and kirifuri trails.
october was a little early for autumn leaves, so maybe i will return later in the year next time. that said, it was a pity i just missed the shrine festival this year!
Great ryokan with a pervasive Japanese aesthetic that made everything feel very special while still having plenty of the amenities of a regular hotel. Easy walk from the train station across the cool bridge and the oni stairs. I highly recommend eating there as well since the private dining and great Japanese style meals were also quite excellent. Onsen was also nice, and the couple of massage chairs outside bathing area were a nice bonus. The room we got was pretty spacious for the two of us. A super nice experience overall!!!
The welcoming, friendly spirit, kindest person I have encountered in my stay Mariko and her husband Yosi She is very nice and caring. The room is clean and shared facilities are great. Mariko made us feel welcome in her home, the Japanese home experience is the highlight of our trip at Nikko. All basic things covered with a lots of freebies you wouldn’t expect if you book in a fancy hotels. Mariko looks after her guest very well and send them off with full tummy and good spirit. You have to book if you want to experience this.
Nice place for staying in Nikko:
- Great location near of famous Shinkyo Bridge and on the main street. 15 minutes walk from the railway station, bus stop in few meters near of the hotel.
- Spacious and cozy room in tradition japanese style.
- Tea, coffe and buns for breakfast in the room.
- Comfortable onsen on the first floor.
- Traditional japanese clothes and cups for tea.
- You can leave your luggage on the reception desk before check-in and after check-out.
- Polite and caring staff.
I was very surprised by the rating of this hotel. It is definitely worth more than 3 stars on booking. I loved how spacious the room was and the tv was a great size compared to other hotels in Japan. Also the king sized bed was very comfortable with luxurious pillows & bedding. I loved the minimalistic feel of the lobby and the room with accents of black fixtures. It is very aesthetic and gave that wabi sabi feel. Would definitely recommend 10/10 and will stay again in the future.
Very warm welcome from what has the feel of a family run hotel.
Very Japanese experience, but also made easy for overseas guests. The breakfast had a good selection.
Great location with view of the lake, right by the boat pier. Sofa in the window for relaxation. Good onsen.
Japanese dinner was excellent with a variety of items.
Despite the bus-stop being behind the hotel, the host insisted on driving us to Nikko as it was pouring with rain. What a kind gesture!
Very glad to have stayed here for 2 nights though without meals. All sold out and Nikko is very busy destination. This ryokan hotel is near to all the must go places . And the onsen is great after a long day out. Staff very friendly & helpful. Piano at lounge in the evening is a relaxing place to hang out . Behind the hotel there is route to kanmangafuji abyss along Daiya river and a little tea house facing the river.
Simple dinner options 2-5 min walk away .
Best location near Shinkyou (means God Bridge which is Japanese Important Cultural Property) and world heritage Toshougu Shrine area in walking distance.
Also the hotel is one of historical facility in Japan where many famous people were visited including Japanese Emperor and famous foreigners.
People who dislike old fashioned style hotel but modern hotel, I don't recommend.
This hotel is a traditional hotel not recent " hotel & resorts".
The host Yoshi, was warm and welcoming! He helped us plan our days to avoid crowds and made sure we were comfortable and welcome at the Sanga Nikko! The location is wonderful, close to train station and grocery store, easy walk into town. After staying in hotels it was wonderful to have a living room and kitchen to stretch out a bit and relax! Loved the Nespresso machine in the mornings. The home is very clean and well kept❤️
The hotel in our opinion is the gateway to Nikko. While the hotel premises have aged, the hotel remains clean, functional and comfortable topped with great service. The proximity to a coin laundry, supermarket and several highly rated restaurants makes the hotel something to return to for our future visits to Nikko.
We checked in on White Day and received a box of chocolates. A nice touch that puts a smile on our faces.
While the location of this property is fantastic, it was the staff that truly made this hotel and our stay special. Rarely have we stayed in a hotel and been made to feel so welcome. the staff at Hatago Nagomi are incredible. From the moment of our arrival, it was clear we were in for a treat. We plan on staying here again on our next trip to Nikko, and will enthusiastically recommend this property to our friends.
The hotel is about 3 km from main railway station, in a quiet area along the Daiya River. The main highlights of Nikko, Toshogu temple, Shinkyo bridge and the imperial villa are all at walking distance from the hotel. Our room was enough for 3 people, and the bathroom was clean. A real onsen is available free of charge inside the building, and is a wonderful experience. Free tea and coffee are available in main hall.
Hidden gem! We loved our stay at this authentic traditional Japanese hotel, walking in kimono and resting in onsen. The rooms were cozy and spacious. The hotel staff was really friendly and helpful. The location is great, surrounded by nature and a short hike. We went for waterfalls and AMAZING Nikko shrines just in 15-30 min drive. Highly recommend!
I spent just one night here before heading to Okunikko. The owner stands out as the most considerate and hospitable host I've encountered during my time in Japan. She went above and beyond to assist me in planning my trip and resolving my luggage issue. The villa is impeccably clean, has a cozy atmosphere, and is incredibly convenient.
It's an old hotel - list most in the area - but very well kept. Our room was part of the renovated ones, Japanese style but with very comfortable western beds. Spacious and with a gorgeous view of the river. The hot spring was nice.
The room was very spacious for a Japanese hotel, with a full length bathtub in the room. The public bathing facilities were wonderful, well-kept, and spacious. The breakfast buffet had a lot of good options and was fantastic.
Mike and his lovely wife were not only the best hosts imaginable, they also have a charming hotel situated at the literal best location in Nikkō.
Their little bar and restaurant was also very good.
Highly recommend!
Second time I've stayed here and it's still a great hotel. Super comfy bed with a thick, warm duvet. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Great location for exploring Nikko and nearby areas.
Located very near to the train station and on the main road. Even though it is a capsule hotel, there is an individual room which can be locked and a secure locker is also available.
