Loved walking in the old part of town where the market-place went on for a mile or so to the Kathmandu Durbar Square. The Kaiser Café in the Dwaika Hotel (Thamel) was delicious & moderately priced, also the Garden of Joy ($4.00) around the corner from the Aryatara Hotel was very good and great garden setting. You'll want to hire a guide /driver to get around to some of the sights in town (Swayambhunath, Boudhhathg, Pasupatinath) and Kathmandu Valley (Patan Durbar & Bhakapur). Don't miss these five sights! Above historical sights all worthwhile! Even though there was significant damage in some areas, it's cleaned up and there's still so much to see.
I have been coming regularly to Kathmandu since I first lived here in the early 1980s. The place in now unrecognisable. The Kathmandu Valley has serious levels of pollution and noisy and tiring congestion. One year on, the post-earthquake reconstruction has not begun and many heritage sites remain sad piles of rubble. The country needs tourism income more than ever but Kathmandu's glory days are long gone for sure. So sad. Taxis are cheap and plentiful, but uncomfortable - no air conditioning or suspension. Insist on the meter and then give a bit extra. Chez Caroline at Babar Mahal Revisited remains my favourite restaurant. And of course the buff momos are the best in the world as they were invented here by the Newars!
Be ready to climb up steep stairs. Go in the afternoon around 4 pm and you will get a great view of the entire Kathmandu valley.
Endless list of interesting things to do in Kathmandu Valley, and an easy drive to many wonderful mountain communities.
Noisy and polluted but you have to do it to understand Nepal and all roads run through the Kathmandu valley. City square and old town definitely worth a look.
In the low or shoulder season, Kathmandu is much nicer than most people would make it sound. Local life is more visible and touts are less pushy. There is plenty to see in terms of UNESCO World Heritage Sites spread out around the city and even more in Kathmandu Valley that would be doable as day trips. If you like shopping and bargaining, this is the place for you. If you like Western comforts (espresso drinks, burgers, Western pop music...) along with your exploration of local fare, this is also the place for you. If you like any peace and quiet, you'll likely hate this city, as even in the side streets you are getting honked at to get out of the way.
The Thamel area is lovely, beautiful for walking around both day and night. The tour of the Kathmandu Valley is excellent but make sure you hire a guide to really make the most of this experience. We ate at both the Third Eye Restaurant and Western Tandoori. Both different but equally delicious.
Bhaktapur
All the beds have curtains, even the top bunks, and the sheets and blankets are incredibly soft and comfortable. The dining area is cozy with a nice view on a pond. All the facilities were kept very clean, and the staff was very friendly. The hostel has a partner homestay nearby with a rooftop terrace. You can watch the sunset from there or do your morning yoga with a beautiful view over Kathmandu valley.
The staff were very friendly and the hotel has an absilutely fascinating location on top of the hill with a beautiful view on Himalays. You will enjoy the views on Himalays and kathmandu valley that you will remember for a lifetime.

Nagarkot
The views of the mountains and the Kathmandu valley were wonderful. The room was clean and had everything you needed: kettle, wifi, fridge, spotless linen. The staff was wonderful. The restaurant was lovely.
Staff were very helpful and pleasant
We had a large room which was perfect for our last few days in Nepal for packing & sorting. The bed was comfy, big bathroom with large bench. A kitchen area with fridge, kettle, water etc with bench space. Lounge area with couch & coffee table. Breakfast had lots of options but we went out for a decent coffee. It was easy to navigate the neighborhood from here.
Loved everything about The Kathmandu Guest House, it's no wonder it's so famous. A respite from the hectic Street life, yet in the centre of everything. Beautiful room with balcony ( I was upgraded) lovely lobby to relax in, beautiful gardens, outdoor and indoor restaurant. So many little places to relax in. The service is amazing, everyone makes you feel at home. Exceptional staff. Although it's quiet you are still only 15 mins walk from Durbar Square. Plenty of taxis right outside the gates to take you to Boudhanath etc. Travel desk in the hotel for longer trips. Beautiful gallery on site, rooftop bar, gift shops.
The staff was super accommodating and helpful. Also extremely nice.
Breakfast was excellent. Lot of choice. Staff were very helpful. Clean rooms. Good location.
Beautiful surroundings, relaxing after the business of Kathmandu.Exceptional pool with shade available.
The staff were friendly, rooms very clean.
The property is absolutely stunning but the staff makes this hotel even more valuable. We will come back to this place for sure!
The property and staff were fabulous. We were treated like royalty the minute we entered the hotel.
We recently had the extraordinary pleasure of returning to Dwarika's Hotel Dhulikel for the second time, and we can hardly find words to express just how incredibly wonderful our experience was. From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of freshness and delicateness that we had never encountered before. The farm-based foods they offer are nothing short of a culinary revelation, bursting with flavors that can only come from the most genuine and natural sources. However, what truly sets Dwarika's Hotel Dhulikel apart is the people. From the very first interaction, we felt like a part of their family royalty. The staff's warmth and genuine desire to make every aspect of our stay perfect was simply heartwarming. Pramesh and Suman deserve special mention for going above and beyond to ensure that our time there was not only memorable but truly unforgettable. Their kindness, attention to detail, and willingness to make every moment special made us feel like cherished guests. The facilities at the hotel are beyond . Every corner is adorned with thoughtful details that reflect a deep commitment to providing an exceptional experience. The little presents left in our room and the careful attention paid to our preferences without us even needing to ask were small touches that made a huge difference. The range of spiritual and creative cultural activities they offer added another layer of enrichment to our stay, allowing us to connect with the essence of Nepal on a profound level.Having traveled to more than 30 countries and experienced luxury accommodations from renowned brands like Jumeirah, Hilton, and Six Senses, we can confidently say that Dwarika's Hotel Dhulikel outshines them all. Dwarika's Hotel Dhulikel, you have turned Nepal into one of our favorite destinations for exactly these reasons.
This was my 6th visit to Kathmandu. This hotel was better than any place where I stayed before. Its location is very good, not so much crowded. The breakfast was more than expected and the staff are all friendly. I will definitely stay at this place again if I visit Nweal again.
I stayed at Hotel Pomelo House with my 5-year-old daughter. The staff were very friendly, they were always there when needed. My room and bathroom were really clean. I stayed there for a week, we became like family. I could say that they are not just after money. I highly recommend this place.
Everything is amazing here. The food, the staff, the services and everything, simply all amazing!! The food is good everyday. The staff are always helpful and smiling. The reception organized the pick up services for us. We even got to book our Mount Everest Experience through the help of the hotel!!! Everything is simply amazing and wonderful!
